Research Interests
• Hydrology and hydrogeology
• Surface and groundwater interactions
• Groundwater flow systems and modelling
• Contaminants transport
Ali's research field is hydrogeology, focusing on groundwater flow systems and contaminants transport. His research project is on the fate and transport of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) at bank filtration sites. The work includes field monitoring of the PFAS concentrations and occurrence. It also includes lab experiments (column and batch soil tests) to assess the transport mechanisms of PFAS in the subsurface medium to estimate the transport parameters for modelling (like adsorption, for instance). In addition, groundwater flow and transport modelling of the field area to simulate PFAS transport from the river to the groundwater.
Key Facts
Ali obtained a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Khartoum, Sudan. Then he pursued a master's degree in Water Science and Engineering with a specialisation in Hydrology and Water Resources from the IHE-Delft Institute for Water Education, the Netherlands. Prior to his master's, Ali worked for one year as a research assistant at the Water Research Centre, University of Khartoum.
Ali's master thesis examined the sensitivity of the groundwater flow and transport models' parameters on the accuracy of the result when modelling variable density fluids, like seawater intrusion. After the master's, Ali joined the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management, TU Wien as a project assistant, where he is persuing his PhD.
