Research Interests

• Ground water resources.
• Pollutant transport and behaviour in the subsurface with a focus on microbiology and micropollutants.

Key Facts

Alfred Paul Blaschke has published more than 70 articles, mainly on groundwater related topics and water resource management. He has coordinated or been involved in numerous projects on subsurface processes, groundwater modelling and management, such as the remediation of the Fischer land fill which is of high political relevance in Austria. He has been the leader of a project on riverbed clogging in the backwater reach of river dams at the Danube and has been involved in interdisciplinary projects such as a project on the effects of infiltration and disposal by infiltration of treated wastewater in remote locations, and a project on nutrient management in the Danube basin and its impact on the Black Sea (DANUBS).

Currently, he is part of the “Groundwater Resource Systems Vienna” research team. The overall objective of this research program is the evaluation and development of essential methods for sustainable use and management of water resources under the water supply. The topic river - floodplain - Infiltration - Groundwater - Groundwater Use forms the interdisciplinary focus of the investigation. Currently, he is also the TU coordinator of a project entitled “Anbindung der Altarme in der Unteren Lobau an die Donau“ which deals with optimised management of riverine landscapes based on a multi disciplinary team.

He is a sought after advisor to government institutions in Austria and Germany. For example, he is an expert to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management on issues related to land fill remediation. He is the supervisor of a Bavarian-Austrian research project on the potential of using thermal waters for water resource purposes. He is also a member of various learned societies, a number of working groups and the head of the working group on “New Approaches to Groundwater Prodection” of the “Österreichischer Wasser- und Abfallwirtschaftsverband (ÖWAV)”. He is deputy head of the Interuniversity Cooperation Centre Water&Health (ICC). The ICC conducts research in the area of drinking water and treats the questions of the origin in the catchment to tap.
